Huffy dominates in Macau but misses out on WTCC Champion

BAM supported British driver Rob Huff dominated the final race weekend of the FIA World Touring Car Championship season at Macau’s infamous Guia street circuit on 17-20 November 2011, taking victory in both races to fall just three points short of claiming a maiden world championship.

Coming into the weekend, Huff set his sights on overhauling a 20-point deficit between him and championship leader Yvan Muller. The Briton gained early momentum by taking pole position in qualifying courtesy of a fastest lap time of 2:30.881.

In the opening race, Huff converted his commanding pace into a lights to flag victory; his fourth career win at the demanding circuit. The 31-year-old showed great focus and determination to hold off several challenges from second-placed Muller over the duration of the 11-lap encounter, reducing his rival’s lead to 13 points ahead of the season finale.

Another victory followed in race two, as from third on the grid the Newmarket racer passed Michel Nykjær and Tom Coronel with a series of exciting manoeuvres to lead the 24-strong field. Huff’s triumph sealed his position as the all-time most successful WTCC driver on the streets of Macau, however a third-place finish for rival Muller denied him the Drivers’ Championship.

Huff’s double win caps a season in which he has claimed eight victories, equalling the record for the number of race wins in a single WTCC season, appeared on the podium at every event and claimed points in every race of the season.

“It’s been a fantastic weekend to end a fantastic year,” said Huff. “They say consistency wins championships, and I claimed points in every single race this season but still haven’t claimed the title. I can’t wait to have another shot next year.”

BAM would like to congratulate Rob on his tremendous season and runner up position in the championship, we can’t wait to celebrate another year with Huffy in 2012.
