Gravity driver Javier Tarancon takes the title in Spa

Congratulations to Gravity driver Javier Tarancon, who sealed the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps championship with a controlled drive to 4th place in the finale at Spa-Francorchamps.

Following his points finish Saturday, Javier came into the deciding Race 2 with an eight-point advantage over nearest challenger Yann Zimmer, with Paul-Loup Chatin also in the hunt for glory.

Having started from 6th on the grid, Javier knew that he had to keep in touch with Zimmer, who started 4th, and ahead of Chatin, who started 9th. He duly performed well and made up ground to find himself in 4th place behind Zimmer and immediately ahead of Chatin.

Javier was unable to keep up with Zimmer ahead of him, but with Chatin behind him he knew that he would still take the title with 4th place as long as the Frenchman didn’t win. Javier duly fended off his Tech 1 team-mate and Zimmer was unable to force his way past Timmy Hansen to challenge the eventual race-winner Alex Riberas.

That leaves Javier as the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps series champion for 2011 with 344 points ahead of Zimmer (338) and Chatin (326).
