Fantastic home win for Gravity driver Javier Tarancon
Fresh from sealing the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps title last week, Gravity driver Javier Tarancon continued his magnificent form by taking victory in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup at Barcelona.
The Spaniard started his day’s work by heading his half of the qualifying draw with a lap of 1m 44.483s, a third of a second ahead of nearest challenger Yann Zimmer. Unfortunately he didn’t come away with pole position as Carlos Sainz Jr set a faster time to head the other group – with Javier starting alongside him on the front row.
From the dirty side of the grid Javier had to give way early on to Norman Nato, who started from the clean side in P3. But it didn’t take long for Javier to find a way back past as Nato spun and dropped back on lap 2.
Javier then set about hunting down leader Sainz, hounding him for a number of laps round the Catalan circuit where passing is notoriously difficult. He then pulled off his successful move on lap 8 to storm into the lead, before pulling away from the entire field en route to a majestic victory.
After Saturday’s victory in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup Javier made a fine charge through the field to take fourth place in Sunday’s title finale at Barcelona.
Javier’s day began with a lap of 1m 43.972s that earned him 9th place on the afternoon’s grid – but he didn’t stay there for long.
After a great getaway, Javier was up to P6 on the first lap – and his charge continued despite the difficulties of passing round the Barcelona track. Daniil Kvyat dropped out early on, promoting him to fifth place. Then Javier set about a dogged pursuit of Robin Frijns ahead of him. He needed to draw on all his reserves of patience before he finally forced his way through for fourth place on lap 11.
By then Javier was a couple of seconds behind the top three, who were running together, but once free of the car in front he soon caught them up. Unfortunately there was not enough time to find a way past Norman Nato to reach the podium. So Javier settled for fourth place while Riberas converted his pole position to victory ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr on a good day for home drivers at the Spanish circuit.
