Champion Richie seals title

Gravity driver Richie Stanaway made sure of the German F3 championship at Assen this weekend with yet another podium finish and his 11th victory of the season.

Richie started race 1 with a lead of 29 points over nearest title challenger Marco Sörensen but the Dane was unable to take part this weekend. That news meant Richie was always going to seal the title, but he made mathematically certain of it with second place in Saturday’s race.

The New Zealander, who sealed the title with second place in Saturday’s Race 1, started Sunday in the best possible fashion by taking yet another pole position.

But Richie did not have things all his own way in the race as Pommer was able to force his way past into an early lead. Richie immediately set about the chase but it took him five laps to regain the front.

Even then it was not a walk in the park for Richie as Pommer kept up the pressure throughout the rest of the 20-lap race. The gap remained under a second for most of the race, with regular attempts by Pommer to get past as the lead pair built up a lead of nearly half a minute over third-placed Alon Day.

In the end Richie was able to resist Pommer’s attentions to add the garnish to his victorious weekend. The German F3 championship returns for its final race weekend at Hockenheim on October 1-2.
