An adventure in the Indian subcontinent to watch Formula 1 at an all new facility in the world’s fastest growing economy. After a successful debut in 2011, all teething problems should be a thing of the past for 2012, making it the perfect time to experience the Indian Grand Prix.
The Buddh International Circuit is located approximately 40 kms from Delhi and is accessed via the new six land highway via dedicated exits for each zone. The circuit looks resplendent in the orange, green and white of the nation’s flag. Viewing options are many and varied both in price and views but all have the most comfortable seats of any track around the world.
Paddock Club is located above the pits providing unrivalled views of the pit lane, F1 paddock and, haze permitting, the first few corners. The customary standards of service are to be found in abundance, all mixed in with a little local flavour.
Drinks, European and Indian food are in plentiful supply with traditional Indian dancers and musicians providing entertainment in between the on track action. There is a garden area; in this case located on the third floor of the pit building at the entrance to the pitlane, providing an excellent view of much of the circuit. VIP access is assured, with a dedicated exit from the highway ensuring swift passage through security checkpoints to the VIP car park located opposite the Paddock Club entrance.
Grandstands are split into four zones – North, South, East and West – with the main grandstand located in the West zone offering excellent views of the pit straight. Grandstands in the South zone offer fantastic views over much of the circuit and are highly recommended. Journey time from central Delhi can be anywhere between 1 and 3 hours depending on ferocity of traffic, return journeys taking the longest.

Wear comfy shoes and don’t be surprised if you become the tourist attraction – you will lose track of the number of times you are asked for your photo by locals. And don’t expect to get anywhere quickly – buses, cars, lorries, rickshaws, bicycles, tuk-tuks and the occasional cow all compete for the same space, even where a space does not exist. The whole place is fascinating, vibrant and friendly, from the colourful saris to the people who cannot do enough for you.
For those wishing to extend their stay a visit to India would not be complete without a visit to Agra and the Taj Mahal, - simply stunning. Visit at sunrise or sunset for the best views. Combine a visit to Agra with a stay in Jaipur and take an elephant ride up the steep cobbled streets to the Amber Fort for stunning views of the city.
Visit the City Palace and Hawa Mahal or ‘Palace of Winds’, beautiful examples of Rajasthan’s rich architecture. Jaipur is also famous for its jewellery – keep your credit card handy. For those interested in wildlife why not take a tiger safari at Ranthambore National Park, just a five hour train journey from Delhi.

New in 2011 was the 5.1km Buddh International Circuit, located in the suburb of Noida in the south of Delhi. Another Hermann Tilke designed circuit, this time with extensive input from F1 teams, the BIC has sixteen corners, two sizeable straights and plenty of elevation changes to keep the drivers busy.
Turn 10, inspired by Istanbul's famous turn 8, is a double-apex, slightly banked corner providing excellent views over much of the circuit in a 'mini-arena' style. Security is tight around the circuit with car engine and boot compartments checked on the way in and airport-style searches and x-ray machines at all entrance gates.
Like all new venues the track was dusty and slippery for the inaugural race in October last year but still drew widespread praise from drivers, engineers and spectators alike.
The Indian Grand Prix has a flavour and ambience all of its own and despite the usual first race hiccups, thoroughly deserves its place on the F1 calendar for years to come.
